Description:  The fabrics of Kotpad are one such and make it absolutely unique in that these fabrics are completely non-chemical. Rough to the touch, they are dyed with the reddish tinge of the roots of the Indian Madder (Aal) tree. It is eco-friendly, non-toxic and hence non-harmful to the skin. In fact, it is even said that the magic weaves of Koraput actually have a healing effect! The powerful and vibrant colors range from deep maroon to dark brown depending on the proportion of dye used and the addition of sulphate of iron.

Significance:

  5. It is delicate and stiff in nature.

Suggestion for Maintenance:

  1. Normal Wash for Kotpad Cottton fabric and dry cleaning for tussar varieties.
  2. In case you want to hand wash your Tussar fabric, use cold water and a mild liquid soap meant for delicate clothes.
  3. Do not wring excess water out. Dry fabric in shade as sun may cause the fabric to fade.
  4. Wash dark colors separately and never use chemical bleach.

These stoles can add a traditional touch to any combination of ladies garment.

Kotpad Handloom is a vegetable-dyed fabric woven by the tribal weavers of the Mirgan community of Kotpad village in Koraput district, Odisha, India.

Kotpad handloom fabric is the first item from Odisha that received the Geographical Indication of India tag, in 2005. The Mirgan community of Kotpad is famous for their exquisite organic dyed textile. They usually weave this textile for “Bhotada”, “Dharua” and other motifs of their neighboring tribal communities.

Like all tribal cultures across the world, their world view has given rise to an elegant creativity, with nature as its inspiration. The fabrics of Kotpad are one such and make it absolutely unique in that these fabrics are completely non-chemical.
